About Us

Salem Area Ministries (SAM) is a faith-based, nonprofit organization that unites churches, schools, businesses, civic organizations, foundations, and community volunteers to serve individuals and families in Salem and western Roanoke County. Guided by its mission to invite, involve, inspire, educate, and strengthen communities through faith in action, SAM works to address food insecurity, poverty, and basic human needs while fostering collaboration among diverse community partners. Through compassionate service and strategic partnerships, the organization strives to provide hope, dignity, and opportunities for individuals of all ages to thrive.

SAM's ministries include Mrs. Dorsey's Clothes Closet, which provides free clothing and essential items to thousands of children and adults each year; school-based food pantry programs that help ensure students and families have reliable access to nutritious food; Summer Feed & Read, which combats childhood hunger during school breaks through grocery assistance and literacy support; and community initiatives such as the Wheels of Hope program, promoting healthy lifestyles by providing bicycles, helmets, and safety education to elementary students. Through volunteer engagement, grant funding, and generous community support, Salem Area Ministries continues to respond to emerging needs while building stronger, healthier, and more connected communities.
